Approximately 11 Canadians die every single day leaving behind about 7 to 10 survivors devastated by the loss. Suicide is the leading cause of death for Canadian youth aged 10 to 14, and second leading cause of death for Canadians aged 10 to 34.
Matthew Rico, lead instructor for What MattRs / Mental Health Training Durham Region, is among the first group of Canadians trained in AMSR (Assessing and Managing Suicide Risk) from the Zero Suicide Institute. The Zero Suicide Institute is an organization that, since 1958, has been a leader in designing, implementing, and evaluating powerful and innovative programs in more than eighty countries around the world. They provide expert support, guidance, training, and consultation to transform suicide prevention and treatment. AMSR is based on the latest research and is designed to support safer suicide care practices, such as Zero Suicide. The AMSR research-informed risk formulation model offers key strategies to navigate challenging conversations and systemic barriers. AMSR teaches a prevention-oriented risk formulation focused on planning not predicting. Over the past year, AMSR has been quickly adopted in major organizations and psychiatric facilities, and has different curriculums for different care providers (outpatient, inpatient, and non-clinical/direct-care
If you have a minimum of 10 participants, you can book a one-day class, that can be taken either online or in-person. The course is half-day long for non-clinical staff.
Discounts available depending on group size and classes booked. Your instructor will work with you to find a mutually agreed upon schedule and arrangements. Any time of the day, evening, and even night is available for training dependent on instructor availability. For in-class training, other cost considerations include where the training is being held, if a meeting room is available, and how far the location is to the Greater Toronto Area/Durham Region. Your instructor is available to fly-out to other provinces for in-class teaching if that is preferred over virtual training.

About the instructor:
Matthew Rico, RN, CPMHN(C), Psychotherapist
Matthew has over 10 years clinical experience in mental health nursing, 7+ years teaching non-violent crisis intervention, has delivered Mental Health First Aid to 600+ Canadians since 2018, and is part of the first group of Canadians certified to provide Assessing and Managing Suicide Risk (AMSR) training from the Zero Suicide Institute. He has been involved in various hospital projects including implementing mindfulness education for staff, research on managing aggression, and assisting with hospital accreditation. Matthew was the Communications Officer for the Registered Nurses Association of Ontario (RNAO) Durham-Northumberland chapter from 2019 to 2021 and a Union Steward for OPSEU Local 331. He has spoken publicly on mental health at various settings, hosted events, done advocacy work for mental health, and presents annually on cultural competency at Canadian Nurses Association (CNA) workshops for helping nurses preparing to write their mental health specialty certificate.
